John Alberto Leguizamo is an Emmy Award-winning and&nbsp;Golden Globe-nominated actor, who was born on July 22, 1964 in Bogotá, Colombia. At age 4, Leguizamo migrated with his family to Queens, New York. He attended the Joseph Pulitzer Middle School and then the Murry Bergtraum High School. He trained in theatre&nbsp;at Long Island University&nbsp;Post in Brookville and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in Manhattan. However, he would not complete his courses at NYU and eventually dropped out in order to pursue a career in stand-up comedy.

Leguizamo’s comedy career began in 1984 on New York’s nightclub circuit until he made his Off-Broadway debut in La Puta Vida Trilogy&nbsp;at <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/public-theater">The Public Theater</a> in November 1987. After the play’s run concluded in December, he assumed the role of Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was already running at The Public. His stage career skyrocketed, however, after writing and starring in the first of a string of one-man hits. Mambo Mouth&nbsp;premiered at the American Place Theatre in 1990, earning him&nbsp;an Obie Award for his acting and an Outer Critics Circle Award for his writing. His next solo show, Spic-O-Rama, staged its Off-Broadway premiere at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/westside-theatre">Westside Theatre</a> in October 1992, earning him both a Lucille Lortel Award and a Theatre World Award.

His reputation for topical, controversial, and energizing one-man shows had grown so much&nbsp;that Leguizamo made his Broadway debut in February 1998 with&nbsp;Freak. The popular production led to him winning his first Drama Desk Award and earning two Tony nominations, one for acting and one for writing. Freak&nbsp;was also televised by HBO, with Spike Lee as director, and Leguizamo won his first Emmy Award for his efforts in 1999. His next solo outing would play not once, but twice on Broadway and centered&nbsp;on Leguizamo’s love life. Sexaholix… A Love Story&nbsp;premiered on Broadway in October 2001 at the Royale Theatre and returned for a special encore engagement at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/broadway-theatre">Broadway Theatre</a> in November 2003.

Leguizamo would once again grace Broadway with a&nbsp;short-lived revival of David Mamet’s American Buffalo, which opened in November 2008. Another solo show, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/ghetto-klown">Ghetto Klown</a>, followed, beginning&nbsp;performances at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lyceum-theatre">Lyceum Theatre</a> in February 2011 and&nbsp;ultimately earning him his second Drama Desk Award. His next one-man juggernaut, inspired by the distinct absence of Latino role models in his son’s history classes, first premiered&nbsp;Off-Broadway at The Public Theater. Latin History For Morons&nbsp;premiered in March 2017,&nbsp;played an extended engagement, and was nominated for two Lucille Lortel Awards. It was then just a matter of time before a move uptown was booked at <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/studio-54">Studio 54</a>&nbsp;for a Broadway transfer from October 19, 2017 through February 25, 2018.

Leguizamo has also forged a prolific onscreen career in Hollywood. After supporting roles in various films throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, his “big break” came in 1993 when he secured the roles of Benny Blanco in Carlito’s Way&nbsp;and Luigi in Super Mario Bros.&nbsp;He went on to earn a Golden Globe nomination in 1996 for his portrayal of Chi-Chi in To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar. Two of Leguizamo's film appearances occurred&nbsp;thanks to filmmaker Baz Luhrmann — Leguizamo portrayed&nbsp;Tybalt in Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet&nbsp;in 1996 and Toulouse-Lautrec in Moulin Rouge!&nbsp;in 2001. Other notable screen credits include Collateral Damage, The Brothers Garcia, The Honeymooners, Land of the Dead, ER, Righteous Kill, and Kick-Ass 2. Leguizamo also voices Sid the Sloth in the popular Ice Age&nbsp;animated movie franchise.

NOTE: This is a review of the Off-Broadway premiere of Latin History for Morons at the Public Theater.John Leguizamo's Latin History for Morons, now at the Public Theater is not for morons, and it is not just a history lesson. It is an homage to heritage, to parenthood, to Leguizamo's family and specifically to his son. Not bad.Of course as soon as I wrote the above I transcribed my notes and discovered that there was a boatload of history in this show. None of it very happy making.At first I thought this might be the Latino version of Colin Quinn's Long Story Short or New York Story, both of which treat the subjects at hand like dysfunctional families (and aren't they?) - but this is more like a treatise being given by a slightly mad professor.Frankly, it is a wonder that there are any descendants of Native Americans/Latinos left on this planet. We treated them sort of like Mike Pence treated gay people when he made same sex marriage illegal in Indiana and arrested anyone who applied for it. Kind of like that.Leguizamo came up fighting. School for him was like Lord of the Flies without adult supervision. One teacher had a mirror on the blackboard to save him the trouble of having eyes installed in the back of his head. He never had a good comeback for anything ever - especially when he was angry. So when his son experienced bullying in eighth grade, Leguizamo took it as a personal mission. He was going to figure out a way to show his son that his Latin heritage (never mind the Jewish part his wife provided) was something to be proud of.The only problem was that he, himself, knew squat.He begins with numbers. Latinos are 40% Indian, 25% black, 25% Jewish, 25% Lebanese, 40% no idea and 25% white. This comes out to 180% and that is just fine.Hundreds of years ago there were 9 million Incas, 8 million North American Indians, 3 million Caribbean Indians, 6 million Mexican Indians for a total of 26 million people. After the GREAT EXTERMINATION there were 1.3 million. Period. The Indians gave us tomatoes, potatoes, chocolate, avocados, corn, Bar-b-que, tango, salsa, mambo, tobacco, cotton, aqueducts and pyramids, and oh yeah, gold. In return the Spaniards gave them syphilis.Before the Spaniards came there had been 1000 years of peace. Tainos Indians in the Caribbean fought with wooden swords in order not to kill anyone.Columbus was the Donald Trump of the New World. Columbus came to the new world on the premise of Your Wallet is in your back pocket, now it is in mine.In 1650 King Philip took 500,000 worth of gold objects and melted it all down into Spanish coins. That would be like taking the David by Michelangelo and reducing it to a kitchen counter.And did I mention Cortés or his cousin Pizarro? And you thought Trump invented nepotism....There is plenty of blame to throw around. From hundreds of years ago to present day slurs by politicians. From war declared against indigenous peoples, to the part they played as enlisted soldiers, to Reparation, to the Iroquois based Constitution, to lynchings to the Trail of Tears. This is a litany of murder, fear and madness. The only thing that keeps us all sane during the story is Lequizamo's relentless quest to help his son that catapults him from one situation to another. His children inspire and baffle him. His wife challenges him. His therapist dismisses him. Nothing stops him.He scrawls on the blackboard with various colored chalks and then messes everything up with some insanely filthy erasers, which he is not above using on his own self. He comes close to flinging books at us: The History of the Indes by Bartolomé de las Casas; Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies (also titled Guns, Germs and Steel: A short history of everybody for the last 13,000 years) by Jared Diamond; People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn.Late in the narrative he is told by his daughter that his journey has been whitewashed and misogynistic. He rectifies this briefly by telling us of Loreta Janeta Velazquez and showing us her book, The Woman in Battle: A Narrative of the Exploits, Adventures, and Travels of Madame Loreta Janeta Velazquez, Otherwise Known as Lieutenant Harry T. Buford, Confederate States Army. Ahem.The evening concludes, not because Leguizamo has run out of story, but because he has run out of time. He could talk until he falls over, but politeness and respect for our attention span makes him wind up the tale with a nod to his son. The real journey here is not located in the past. Joseph Papp founded The Public Theater in 1954 as the Shakespeare Workshop. The organization moved into its current home on Lafayette Street in Lower Manhattan in 1967.

The Public Theater building was under risk of demolition until the Public persuaded the city council to sell them the building for use as a theatre. As a result, the building was granted New York City landmark status in 1965, and architect Giorgio Cavaglieri converted it into a theatre in 1967.

The company’s inaugural production in its new home was the world premiere of *Hair*, which also marked its first non-Shakespeare offering. The building is comprised of five performance spaces: the Anspacher Theater (which has a 275-seat capacity), LuEsther Hall (160 seats), Martinson Theater (199 seats), Newman Theater (299 seats), and Shiva Theater (99 seats).

The Public complex also include office spaces; the restaurant and bar The Library; and Joe’s Pub, a cabaret-style venue used for smaller musical revues and soloists. The company also operates the [Delacorte Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/delacorte-theater) in Central Park, which has been home to free Shakespeare in the Park productions during the summer since 1954.
