Celia Keenan-Bolger was born on&nbsp;January 26, 1978 in Detroit, Michigan and is a&nbsp;Tony Award winner&nbsp;and Broadway favorite. Celia Keenan-Bolger returns to Broadway in Paula Vogel's Mother Play in April 2024.

Keenan-Bolger trained at both the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and the Detroit School of Arts and graduated from the University of Michigan with a BFA in musical theatre. She began her stage career in regional theatres such as the Goodman Theatre in Chicago&nbsp;and Theatre Works in Silicon Valley, and she made her Off-Broadway debut as Aggie in&nbsp;Summer of '42&nbsp;in December 2001.

During the Kennedy Center's Sondheim Celebration in 2002, she starred as Johanna in&nbsp;Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,&nbsp;and she would then perform again off Broadway in January 2003&nbsp;in Second Stage Theatre's production of Michael John LaChiusa's&nbsp;Little Fish. Also in 2003, she would originate the role of&nbsp;Clara Johnson in the celebrated musical&nbsp;The&nbsp;Light in&nbsp;the Piazza&nbsp;at both Seattle's Intiman Theatre and Chicago's&nbsp;Goodman Theatre.

She originated the role of&nbsp;Olive Ostrovsky in William Finn and&nbsp;Rachel Sheinkin's&nbsp;The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at&nbsp;the&nbsp;Barrington Stage Company in the summer of 2004,&nbsp;reprised her performance off Broadway at&nbsp;Second Stage Theatre in January 2005, and did so again on&nbsp;Broadway,&nbsp;marking&nbsp;her Broadway debut in April 2005. She was nominated for her first Tony Award for her performance as Olive and received a Theatre World Award and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance.&nbsp;She remained with the production until September 17, 2006. Her next Broadway venture would be to originate the role of&nbsp;Éponine in the 2006 revival of&nbsp;Les Misérables, playing the role from October 2006 to January 2008, earning a Drama Desk nomination in 2007.

Keenan-Bolger returned off Broadway for her next productions,&nbsp;starring as Mary in the musical&nbsp;Saved&nbsp;at Playwrights Horizons from&nbsp;May to June 2008, as Katie in&nbsp;Bachelorette&nbsp;for Second Stage Theatre from July to August 2010, and as&nbsp;Jenny Bridges in&nbsp;A Small Fire&nbsp;from December 2010 to January 2011, once again at Playwrights Horizons. She then landed the role of Molly in New York Theatre Workshop's acclaimed production of&nbsp;Peter and the Starcatcher, which played the Off-Broadway venue from February to April 2011, resulting in yet another Drama Desk Award nomination, and transferred to Broadway in March 2012, leading to&nbsp;her second Tony Award nomination. Ahead of the Broadway premiere, Keenan-Bolger also starred as&nbsp;Mary Flynn in New York City Center's Encores!&nbsp;production of Sondheim's&nbsp;Merrily We Roll Along&nbsp;in February&nbsp;2012.

In the fall of 2013, she took on the role of&nbsp;Laura Wingfield in the Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams'&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/the-glass-menagerie">The Glass Menagerie</a>&nbsp;from September 2013 to February 2014. She garnered great acclaim for her performance, winning a Drama Desk Award, earning her third Tony Award nomination, and receiving the&nbsp;Theatre World Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence in 2014.

Keenan-Bolger followed this performance with her&nbsp;Lincoln Center Theater debut, starring as Mother in an Off-Broadway production of Sarah Ruhl's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/the-oldest-boy">The Oldest Boy</a>&nbsp;from October to December 2014. She was next seen on Broadway as Varya, opposite Diane Lane, in Roundabout Theatre Company's 2016 revival of Chekhov's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/the-cherry-orchard-0">The Cherry Orchard</a>,&nbsp;and she was last seen off Broadway in Second Stage Theatre's 2017 production of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/a-parallelogram">A Parallelogram</a>.&nbsp;

Keenan-Bolger returned&nbsp;to Broadway on November 1, 2018,&nbsp;taking&nbsp;on the role of Scout in Aaron Sorkin's new stage adaptation of the classic Harper Lee novel&nbsp;To Kill a Mockingbird. She won her first Tony Award in the category of Best Performance By An Actress In A Featured Role In A Play&nbsp;for her portrayal, and she ended&nbsp;her year-long run in the production on November 3, 2019. She led the reopening cast of the play once more starting in October 2021.

Although primarily known for her career on stage, Ms. Keenan-Bolger has also appeared in a number of high-profile television shows over the years, including Law &amp; Order&nbsp;(2007), Law &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit&nbsp;(2014), Nurse Jackie&nbsp;(2014), The Good Wife&nbsp;(2015), Elementary&nbsp;(2015), Good Behavior&nbsp;(2016), Blue Bloods&nbsp;(2017), NCIS: New Orleans&nbsp;(2017), and Bull&nbsp;(2018). A regrettably sour note has hung over this new Broadway adaptation of <a href="/show/to-kill-a-mockingbird">To Kill a Mockingbird</a>&nbsp;at the <a href="/theatres/shubert-theatre">Shubert Theatre</a>, when the theatrical rights for an adaptation of Harper Lee's historic novel were assigned to it by Lee and subsequently her estate (who then challenged the version produced by playwright and television writer Aaron Sorkin that led to litigation that was settled in court).But the producer Scott Rudin in turn threatened other planned productions of a previous long-established version with litigation to stop them. These included a UK national tour based on its last London production at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park in 2013 that had been announced months earlier, and was summarily cancelled on the eve of its opening; and American regional stock and amateur productions that were similarly affected (but offered the rights by Rudin to re-rehearse and present his new version).Of course a producer wants to both protect and maximise his own investment in a property he's acquired, but it all got very messy as the other companies had all secured the rights in the previous version in good faith, and were innocent parties to a dispute between a David-and-Goliath battle of now rival versions.Given that the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel it is based on is about ensuring justice is done, there was a certain dramatic irony in the perceived injustices that resulted (heartbroken child actors were reported to have written to Rudin when the production they'd rehearsed was cancelled).Lee's Pulitzer prize-winning story revolves around an intensely moral lawyer Atticus Finch who takes on the defence of a black man falsely accused of raping a young white woman in rural 1930s racially divided Alabama. Sorkin -- who famously scripted "The West Wing" -- is certainly good at illuminating the behind-the-scenes machinations of the legal process here, both official and unofficial, including a quiet home visit from the presiding judge and a less quiet attempt by the woman's father to attack Finch (and also to take part in an attempted lynching of his client).Sorkin and his director Bartlett Sher stage it primarily as a scorching courtroom drama, folding it seamlessly with scenes from Finch's home life as his two worlds collide.Given the rise of white nationalism in Trump's America, a lot of this feels very current. But it also makes for gripping, seriously absorbing theatre. A top-flight Broadway cast, led by the grave but sympathetic <a href="/actor-profile/jeff-daniels">Jeff Daniels</a> as Atticus Finch, also features solid support from <a href="/actor-profile/celia-keenan-bolger">Celia Keenan-Bolger</a> and Will Pullen as his children, Gideon Glick as their best friend Dill, LaTanya Richardson Jackson as housemaid and confidant Calpurnia, Gbenga Akinnagbe as the defendant Tom Robertson and Frederick Weller as the victim's father.Two live musicians, seated on either side of designer Miriam Buether's atmospherically detailed stage, play Adam Guettel's alternately folksy and ominous score, to underscore and frame the action.Now carrying an advance ticket sale of over $20million, To Kill a Mockingbird is slaying Broadway -- and looks like it could be around for a long stay, not the usual 12-16 weeks that most plays get.(Photo by&nbsp;Julieta Cervantes)

The Hayes Theater, established in 1912 and located in the heart of New York City, is a notable venue for Broadway productions. Anthony Marcus Shalhoub is a three-time Tony Award nominee&nbsp;and a Golden Globe and three-time Emmy Award winner&nbsp;who was born on October 9, 1953 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Growing up in a Lebanese-American household, Shalhoub attended Green Bay East High School, where he would regularly perform in plays. He studied for a short while at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, but soon transferred schools to study&nbsp;drama,&nbsp;graduating from the University of Southern Maine with a bachelor's degree and later from the Yale School of Drama with a master's degree in 1980.

After four seasons with the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he moved to New York City. His stage career got off to a flying start in 1985 when he made his Broadway debut as&nbsp;Jesus Costazuela in&nbsp;The Odd Couple. He then appeared in the Shakespeare in the Park&nbsp;productions of&nbsp;Richard II&nbsp;and&nbsp;Henry IV Part I&nbsp;in 1987, two further <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/public-theater">Public Theater</a> productions in 1988 (Zero Positive&nbsp;and&nbsp;For Dear Life), and the Classic Stage Company's&nbsp;Rameau's Nephew, also in 1988. Shalhoub made his return to Broadway&nbsp;as he assumed the role of&nbsp;Scoop Rosenbaum in the 1989 Broadway premiere of&nbsp;The Heidi Chronicles.

Shalhoub earned his first Tony Award nomination&nbsp;in 1992 for his performance as&nbsp;Charlie in&nbsp;Conversations With My Father&nbsp;and it was around this time that his TV career began to blossom. He was cast to play the recurring role of&nbsp;Antonio Scarpacci in Wings&nbsp;and starred in a total of 144 episdoes through to 1997. During this time, he also managed to squeeze in a few featured roles in films such as Honeymoon in Vegas, Addams Family Values, I.Q., and Big Night.&nbsp;A string of film credits also followed his time after Wings, most notably the Men in Black&nbsp;and Spy Kids&nbsp;movie franchises&nbsp;as well as Paulie, The Impostors, The Siege, Galaxy Quest, and Thir13en Ghosts. In 2002, he landed perhaps his most iconic role as Adrian Monk,&nbsp;a character he played in the TV series Monk&nbsp;until 2009 (125 episodes later). The role earned Shalhoub his first Golden Globe Award and Emmy Award&nbsp;in 2003. Over the years, he also picked up two further Emmy Awards (in 2005 and 2006), five further Emmy Award nominations, and four further Golden Globe nominations.

Shalhoub made a brief return to Off-Broadway theatre in 2007 in Second Stage Theater's production of&nbsp;The Scene. In 2010, after the final season of Monk,&nbsp;he returned to Broadway as Saunders in the farce&nbsp;Lend Me a Tenor&nbsp;and went on to star as&nbsp;Mr. Bonaparte in&nbsp;Golden Boy&nbsp;in fall 2012, eventually picking up his second Tony Award nomination. Joseph Papp founded The Public Theater in 1954 as the Shakespeare Workshop. The organization moved into its current home on Lafayette Street in Lower Manhattan in 1967.

The Public Theater building was under risk of demolition until the Public persuaded the city council to sell them the building for use as a theatre. As a result, the building was granted New York City landmark status in 1965, and architect Giorgio Cavaglieri converted it into a theatre in 1967.

The company’s inaugural production in its new home was the world premiere of *Hair*, which also marked its first non-Shakespeare offering. The building is comprised of five performance spaces: the Anspacher Theater (which has a 275-seat capacity), LuEsther Hall (160 seats), Martinson Theater (199 seats), Newman Theater (299 seats), and Shiva Theater (99 seats).

The Public complex also include office spaces; the restaurant and bar The Library; and Joe’s Pub, a cabaret-style venue used for smaller musical revues and soloists.
