The new Off-Broadway musical&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/titanique" target="_blank">Titanique</a>&nbsp;has a&nbsp;cast and creative team of Broadway vets. But they, led by director/co-writer Tye Blue, also share a background doing pop parody musicals and dinner theatre in LA. This is the cozy, campy world from which&nbsp;Titanique&nbsp;hails, and it's now docked here on the East Coast through September. Don't go expecting a piece of high art or a faithful recreation of the&nbsp;James Cameron&nbsp;film it's based on, but do expect a titanic amount of pure joy.You'll get that vibe immediately upon entering the Asylum Theatre — a casual comedy venue that perfectly fits the show — when you hear the pre-show playlist that includes "Bootylicious," "This Will Be," and "We Are Family." Nostalgic-meets-contemporary is the name of the game, and so it is with the 100-minute show that follows.Titanique&nbsp;launches from a Titanic museum tour, where visitors are gawking over the Heart of the Ocean (here an oversized Party City decoration). Suddenly, a woman appears and reveals herself to be Celine Dion, shedding her trash-covered cloak to reveal a glittery gold gown that looks like it cost more than the entire rest of the production. She takes over the tour, and the narration of the show, to share what really happened on board the Titanic — namely, to Jack and Rose.Her tale is as much a love letter to the&nbsp;Titanic&nbsp;movie as it is to the people obsessed with that movie: pop culture-savvy, queer theatre kids, or so the creators presume from experience. (Happy Pride indeed.) References to TikTok trends (like Julia Fox's pronunciation of "uncut gems") and niche theatre jokes (a life-size <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/company" target="_blank">Patti LuPone</a> cutout makes multiple appearances) abound. Older and/or less theatre-obsessed audiences will find more of their enjoyment in the recreations of all the major&nbsp;Titanic&nbsp;movie moments and the Dion hits that score the show.Some of those songs are more cleverly slotted in than others, but they're all gorgeously performed. The&nbsp;Titanique&nbsp;cast's Broadway-grade talent shines at its fullest through their voices.&nbsp;Rose (Alex Ellis) and The Unsinkable Molly Brown (Kathy Deitch) get the powerhouse duet "Tell Him," which starts as a heartfelt encouragement and ends as an extended innuendo involving an eggplant prop. As a "bedazzled metrosexual" version of Rose's fiance Cal, John Riddle gets a late-show solo that also brings the house down. As Celine, the over-the-top Marla Mindelle harmonizes with nearly everyone's songs (they are technically hers, after all), and though her voice has a different tonal quality than the real Dion's, there's a brief moment in "My Heart Will Go On" when she sounds uncannily like the singer.Alongside them, Constantine Rousouli cuts a dashing, boyish figure as Jack (with the same swoopy hair as Titanic-era Leo DiCaprio), and Frankie Grande steals every scene he's in as Victor Garber, a mashup of a few Titanic&nbsp;side characters. Jaye Alexander plays his right-hand seamen (the source of many double entendres) but gets a late showcase as "the Iceberg bitch," who's dressed as Tina Turner and hosts a&nbsp;RuPaul's Drag Race&nbsp;lip-sync battle to decide who will make it on the lifeboat. Because why not?Titanique&nbsp;is one of those shows where anything can happen, so it does, up until the final twists that you surely won't see coming. It's best just to grab your friends, grab some drinks (the show sells them in buckets), and just get on board. The cast and creators' enthusiasm is infectious, and if you just let it wash over you, you'll have a boatload of fun.<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/titanique" target="_blank">Titanique&nbsp;is at the Asylum Theatre through September 25. The Daryl Roth Theatre is an exceptional Broadway theatre venue located at 20 Union Square East in the lively city of New York. Originally built as a bank in 1847, it was converted into a theatre and named after the esteemed producer Daryl Roth in 1998. The interior of Daryl Roth Theatre is as remarkable as its history. [*The Cottage*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27834-the-cottage-tickets) is an airy — and gassy — comedy about cheating. Sandy Rustin wrote the play with a single-minded mission — to keep you in stitches — and it largely hits the mark. 

Now on Broadway a decade after it premiered in Queens, the play’s laughs and momentum do dip on occasion. Nonetheless, the cast consistently manages to make infidelity entertaining. Even when someone pulls a gun.

It’s 1923 in an English country house. Don’t let the posh locale fool you, nor that Noël Coward has been cited as an inspiration for this rom-com: Nobody’s here to mind their upper-crust manners. The onstage curtain at the [Hayes Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/hayes-theater) teases this. At first glance, you see a garden of colorful wildflowers outside the house. Soon, your eye catches squirrels boinking here and deer doing it there. It mirrors what goes on inside.

Since 1917, Sylvia ([Laura Bell Bundy](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/interviews/laura-bell-bundy-returns-to-broadway-after-15-years-in-the-cottage)) and Beau (*Will & Grace*'s Eric McCormack), who are married to other people, have carried on a *Same Time, Next Year*-style annual one-night tryst at his widowed mother’s country home decorated with animal heads. The sly implications of that decor eventually become clear. It’s always been a place about notching trophies.

It’s the morning after “passionate, wildly erotic sex.” Beau’s showering. Sylvia wears lingerie and is lit by afterglow. Per usual, he calls her Tulip, an endearment that makes her weak in the knees. But something’s different. Sylvia’s got a seven-year itch. She wants Beau to herself full-time. She has sent a telegram to her husband, Clarke (Alex Moffat, of *Saturday Night Live*), and Beau’s wife, Marjorie (Lilli Cooper), to tell them what’s going on.

In short order, they come to the love shack. The place gets even more crowded with the arrival of Deirdre (Dana Steingold) and her ex-husband Richard (Nehal Joshi). To reveal more about their interconnections and plot twists would be a killjoy. Suffice it to say there's a daisy chain of dalliances – and one link is way too close for comfort. 

Of course, that’s the point. For laughs' sake, the situation is over-the-top. Rustin raids the comedy playbook for the pure sake of humor. She includes an extended fart joke, bad puns, an ongoing gag about cigarettes and booze popping up in unexpected places, a potential murder plot (hence the gun), and a truly dopey dime-store disguise. 

“You stuck a mustache on a mustache?” asks a gobsmacked Sylvia. It’s absurd and funny, and it gets to the core of this layer cake of a comedy. Can’t have too much of a good thing. 

Jason Alexander, a *Seinfeld* alum who won a Tony for *Jerome Robbins’ Broadway*, impresses in his Broadway directing debut. He’s [assembled an ace ensemble](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/stars-of-will-and-grace-snl-legally-blonde-move-into-the-cottage-on-broadway), keeps the pace reasonably revved, and wrapped it up in a good-looking production. One quibble – he overplays his hand with grandly silly music and light cues as characters make entrances.

McCormack hams it up expertly as the haughty Beau. Cooper slow-burns until Marjorie gets a moment to let it all rip. Broadway newcomer Moffat steps up as the klutzy charmer. Best of the bunch is Bundy, who makes every comedic line and pose gleefully giggle-inducing. 

In the end, *The Cottage* is about Sylvia opening her eyes to her relationships with men. But the moment that sticks out is the hilarious sight of Sylvia plugging her nose with an old-timey phone receiver. Moments like that make *The Cottage* a Broadway funhouse.

'The Cottage' review — an over-the-top comedy funhouse

The Hayes Theater, established in 1912 and located in the heart of New York City, is a notable venue for Broadway productions. Known formerly as the Little Theatre, the Helen Hayes Theatre was renamed in 1983 in honor of the acclaimed actress. Since its renovation in 2017, the Hayes has become one of the most technologically advanced, intimate Broadway houses. Its seating capacity of 597 hasn't affected the quality and charm of performances held there. Known for presenting some of the most innovative works of contemporary playwrights, it continues to attract theatre buffs from around the world. 

 ## How to Get There 

The Hayes Theater is situated at 240 West 44th Street, between 7th and 8th avenue. For those taking the subway, the Times Square-42nd Street station served by N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, and 7 trains is the closest stop. If you prefer a taxi or a ride-sharing service, simply set your destination to the theater's address. There are also numerous parking facilities within a few blocks where you can leave your car if you're driving.

There have been moments in the history of musical theater when, like a twister, the sheer talent and whirling spectacle of a production have flattened any negative criticism that stood to get in its way. Take October, 2003 for example. That was the month that <a href="/show/wicked">Wicked </a>opened in New York to generally dour reviews. But since then, more than 8.8 million people have found the heart, nerve and wisdom to pay a visit, resulting in the happy scene of a Broadway house filled with as many teens as adults, and making a tale, born from a 115-year-old children's novel, one of the top five highest grossing shows of all time.The latest incarnation of this impeccably oiled entertainment machine finds a new gear courtesy of a British import. Reprising the role she played on the West End for three years, Rachel Tucker steps in as the green-skinned Elphaba, a.k.a. the Wicked Witch of the West, and nearly blows the roof off the massive Gershwin Theatre with her opening number, "The Wizard and I." As the song reaches its climax, Tucker raises her arms, not especially high, but in a crooked witchly fashion, showing off the kind of smart physicality she brings throughout the evening. Opposite her, as Glinda the Good, Kara Lindsay aces the delicate assignment of being both ditzy blonde and sensitive friend while showing off her clear soprano and great comic chops.Among the show's many happy surprises, Michele Lee turns up, in fine form, as the scheming Madame Morrible, and Arielle Jacobs charms us from a wheelchair as Nessarose, until that unfortunate incident with a falling house. James Lynn Abbott's best moment of choreography comes not from any of the numerous, raucous ensemble pieces, but from a beautifully rendered bit of quiet ballet that arrives unexpectedly during the energetic "Dancing Through Life." And Stephen Schwartz's classic score provides a wonderful playground for the cast to swing upon, while reminding us of this composer's important history. Close your eyes and hear strains of Pippin in "As Long as You're Mine." Find the hint of Godspell playfulness in the staccato beats of "What is this Feeling."The Wikipedia plot summary for Wicked is over 2100 words long, which speaks not only to the show's dedicated fan base, but to the fact that this is a musical with a lot going on. It's a romantic comedy with strong political undertones, an animal rights treatise with a talking goat and flying monkeys, a parable on the pitfalls of getting what you want, a warning on the limits of friendship, and an homage to a classic film. In the realm of mythology, green-hued creatures have never had a simple time of it (see Shrek, Hulk, et al.), and rare is the story, let alone the musical, that is centered on two women who are unrelated, yet have a complex emotional attachment, while still remaining starkly unique individuals. But Eugene Lee's epic scenic design provides the framework to tie everything together. The show is completely set within the machinations of a huge clock, the Clock of the Time Dragon to be precise. And whether or not you are up on your Oz lore, this seems, at first, incongruous with the magical proceedings on stage. Why is Glinda's bubble-mobile so pendulum like? But then the metaphor becomes clearer. "I would do anything to turn back the clock," laments Elphaba, and later she demands, "Wait just a clock tick!" Once a spell is cast, it cannot be undone. 'Wicked' review

The Gershwin Theatre is a breathtakingly stunning Broadway theater located in the heart of New York City. Named in honor of renowned composer George Gershwin and his brother lyricist Ira Gershwin, it was opened in 1972 and currently remains the largest Broadway theater with a capacity of around 1933 seats. Designed by set designer Ralph Alswang, the architectural aesthetics of the theater are a delightful blend of Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. Over the years, it has hosted some of the most iconic and award-winning Broadway shows including 'Show Boat', 'Sweeney Todd', and its longest running show, the 'Wicked' that has been playing since 2003. Orpheum Theatre - TodayTix

The Orpheum Theatre is located in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan. Originally established as a theatre in 1904, the venue once played a huge role in the Yiddish theatre scene and was known as the Player’s Theatre.

In the 1920s, the building was converted into a movie theatre. The venue reopened as a theatre in November 1959 with *Little Mary Sunshine*. In the following decades, landmark Off-Broadway productions including Cole Porter’s *Anything Goes* and Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s *Little Shop of Horrors* premiered at the Orpheum Theatre.

After further renovations in the 1980s including a capacity increase from 299 to 347 seats, the venue opened again in 1994 as the Orpheum Theatre with *Stomp*, which ran until 2023. Liberty Theatres owns and operates the Orpheum and the [Minetta Lane Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/minetta-lane-theatre) in the Greenwich Village neighborhood.
