Wayne Alphonso Brady&nbsp;was born June 2, 1972 in Columbus, Georgia and is primarily known as a comedian and Emmy Award-winning TV personality in the United States, appearing regularly on the improvisational comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?&nbsp;and as the host of Let's Make a Deal,&nbsp;Don't Forget the Lyrics!&nbsp;and The Wayne Brady Show.

Mr. Brady moved to Orlando, Florida, as a young child and attended Dr. Phillips High School. After graduating in 1989, he enrolled at the University of Miami. He began his career&nbsp;at the Orlando improv troupe SAK Comedy Lab and performed in community theaters, and he finally moved to Los Angeles in 1996. His big break came after appearing in the original UK version of Whose Line Is It Anyway?&nbsp;in 1998 which led to him becoming a regular on the US version from 1998 until 2007. Brady won an&nbsp;Emmy Award in 2003 for his efforts, following Emmy nominations in 2002 and 2001.&nbsp;The series was relaunched in 2013.

The next milestone in his career was&nbsp;The Wayne Brady Show,&nbsp;which ran from&nbsp;2001 until 2004, resulting in him&nbsp;picking&nbsp;up two Daytime Emmy Awards in the category of Outstanding Talk Show Host&nbsp;in 2003 and 2004.

In September 2004, Brady made his Broadway debut as Billy Flynn in the long-running hit musical&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;for a limited engagement through December 2004.

From 2007 through to 2009, he hosted&nbsp;the singing game show Don't Forget the Lyrics!&nbsp;on Fox and went on to become the host of Let's Make a Deal&nbsp;on CBS from October 2009, a job he still holds. He has received&nbsp;a total of seven Daytime Emmy Award nominations to date in the category of Outstanding Game Show Host for his work.

In August 2010, he would return to the stage to play Tom Collins in&nbsp;Rent&nbsp;at the Hollywood Bowl, directed by Neil Patrick Harris. He returned to Broadway from&nbsp;November 21, 2015 through to&nbsp;March 27, 2016 to assume the role of Lola in&nbsp;Kinky Boots&nbsp;and would appear for one night only in the off-Broadway production of&nbsp;White Rabbit, Red Rabbit&nbsp;at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/westside-theatre">Westside Theatre</a> in 2016. Later that year he took on the role of&nbsp;Charley Kringas in a Los Angeles production of Stephen Sondheim's&nbsp;Merrily We Roll Along, and from January 17 through to April 9, 2017, he assumed the role of Aaron Burr in the Chicago production of&nbsp;Hamilton.

Over the course of his career, Brady has guest starred in or lent his voice to&nbsp;a plethora of television shows and films, most notably Sofia the First,&nbsp;Foodfight!,&nbsp;How I Met Your Mother,&nbsp;30 Rock,&nbsp;Stargate SG-1,&nbsp;Robot Chicken,&nbsp;Getting Along Famously,&nbsp;and Everybody Hates Chris.

As a recording artist, Brady has released two studio albums:&nbsp;A Long Time Coming&nbsp;(2008) and&nbsp;Radio Wayne&nbsp;(2011),&nbsp;picking up a Grammy Award nomination in 2009 for the song&nbsp;A Change Is Gonna Come.

Brady reprised&nbsp;his role as Lola in&nbsp;Kinky Boots for a special return engagement from&nbsp;March 5 through to April 26, 2018.

It's not everyday a shoe gets an entrance applause. But at a recent performance of <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/kinky-boots" target="_blank">Kinky Boots</a>&nbsp;off Broadway, that's just what happened when the eponymous kinky boot was unveiled. Here she is, folks: bright red, sparkling, not a seam out of place, with a stiletto heel as high as the heavens, and "two and a half feet of irresistible, tubular sex." With her unveiling, and the entrance of the drag queen wearing her, the message is clear: Kinky Boots has officially sashayed back to New York.&nbsp;In 2013, Kinky Boots the musical premiered on Broadway, with a book by Harvey Fierstein and Tony-winning original pop-rock songs by Cyndi Lauper. The show won the Tony Award for Best Musical and ran on Broadway until 2019. Now, the runway she's walking on is smaller than it was on Broadway. The band may have fewer instruments. But Kinky Boots still has its big, glittery heart intact.&nbsp;And amid recent anti-LGBTQ legislation, the musical and its message of acceptance are more powerful and necessary.The&nbsp;Kinky Boots&nbsp;musical is based on the 2005 British indie film of the same name (which starred a not-yet-famous Joel Edgerton and Chiwetel Ejiofor). It's based on a true story of a struggling British shoe factory owner named Charlie who, realizing that the demand is dying down for British-made loafers, pivots to making shoes for another type of man: drag queens, with the help of an opinionated queen named Lola.The smaller <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/stage-42" target="_blank">Stage 42</a> is actually an asset. You're close enough to the stage to Lola (an incandescent Callum Francis) and her fellow drag queens (called the Angels), to admire their contouring and to see the fine craftsmanship on their boots — my eye was particularly drawn to a black and green pair of lace-up boots, and what used to appear generic green from a Broadway house is actually a patterned brocade with a sparkly white heel. Gregg Barnes's costumes are eye-popping enough for the runway at RuPaul's Drag Race.Fierstein has made some changes to the show's book for this new version, and to reflect changing terminology. He cut every mention of "transvestites" from the script. It's a smart cut, as it means Lola is never explaining drag culture to the audience. The show also cut young Charlie and young Lola, so we never see the young Lola being slapped by her father for wearing heels, a more uneven narrative choice.Charlie (a dashing Christian Douglas) and his life story introduces the musical, so it's now less about the parallel stories of Charlie and Lola, and more a story about a straight white man learning how to open his mind.&nbsp;Unfortunately, Charlie has always been the less interesting character — after all, the show is called Kinky Boots, not Practical Loafers. But as Charlie, Douglas is a clean-cut and upright figure who you can't imagine going to a drag show — this creates a clearer contrast between him and the rambunctious Lola. His tenor voice is also pleasing and powerful, though his Northampton accent is spotty at times.&nbsp;Callum Francis has played Lola in the West End and on Broadway, so there's an effortlessness and youthfulness to his portrayal. His Lola is multidimensional: a bombastic show queen in the song "The Land of Lola," slyly funny during the book scenes, and sensitive and soulful in the song, "I'm Not My Father's Son." Francis is a joy to watch. And the way he disdainfully says "BUURRRgundy!" should be a sound on TikTok.&nbsp;Some aspects of this Kinky Boots&nbsp;are less spectacular than they were on Broadway. The choreography by director Jerry Mitchell is unimaginative and lacks oomph, especially for the Angels, defaulting to mostly arm movements and an occasional high kick. How do you choreograph for drag queens with no hairography and only one death drop? RuPaul would tell you to sashay away.&nbsp;Despite these nit-picks, now is the perfect time to see Kinky Boots. The musical is no longer a simple feel-good tale; it's an important entreaty for equality. There's still a whiff of fantasy about the whole thing, such as how Lola easily turns the factory's homophobe Don into a stiletto-heel-wearing ally of the LGBTQ community. But when Don says, "You lookin' for me to say men in frocks is all right?" and Lola responds, "I'm not looking for you to say anything," the exchange packs a powerful punch now.&nbsp;With today's news headlines of drag queens being terrorized by the Proud Boys, and the Don't Say Gay bill in Florida, we need the fantasy that Lola and her Angels provide. Or maybe it's not a fantasy. It's a promise of what's possible, if all of us, "ladies, gentlemen, they, them and those who have yet to make up their minds," put on our heels and walk confidently together.<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/kinky-boots" target="_blank">Kinky Boots&nbsp;is running at Stage 42. Formerly known as the Little Shubert Theatre, Stage 42 is one of the largest Off-Broadway theatres in New York City with a capacity of 499 seats.

Designed by architect Hugh Hardy in 2002, the theatre was the Shubert Organization's first Off-Broadway venue. In fact, it was the first new theatre the Shuberts built since Broadway’s [Ethel Barrymore Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/barrymore-theatre) in 1928. Stage 42 is part of a new residential tower on 42nd Street.

20 years old and she’s still got it, folks!

With the 20th anniversary of [*Chicago*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/22-chicago-tickets) speedily approaching, I took a trip to Broadway’s [Ambassador Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/ambassador-theatre) to witness that timeless story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery… and rest assured, I still hold it near and dear to my heart!

*Chicago* is the second longest-running show in Broadway history, behind Andrew Lloyd Webber’s infamous [*Phantom*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/38-the-phantom-of-the-opera-tickets), and still holds the record of being the longest-running musical revival and longest-running American musical on the Great White Way. So how has this iconic musical managed to outlast its competitors in the increasingly crowded and competitive market place that is Broadway?

One word can sum it all up, really… “Class”… which just so happens to be the title of one of the more reflective numbers in the show. As Velma and Mama Morton were serenading us, asking whatever happened to class, I couldn’t help but think that this production has it in abundance. *Chicago* proves that you don’t need to bombard your audience with a number of lavish sets or elaborate costume changes to put together a winning musical. All you need is a live band on stage, intoxicating the auditorium with that jazz-infused score from the genius that is John Kander and Fred Ebb and sprinkle it with that Bob Fosse-style choreography, and before you know it, you’ve razzle dazzled ‘em! Those tight-fitting, all-black (and often transparent) costumes by William Ivey Long enhance the show’s sensuality with equal measures of male and female exposure and have themselves become as recognisable as the show’s glittering red logo.

You forget how ground-breaking this revival must have been, when it officially opened on Broadway on 14th November 1996. Moments of breaking the fourth wall to introduce the musical numbers and having the conductor of the band interact with the actors on stage, still set *Chicago* apart from its predecessors, and who wouldn’t want to call for their “Exit Music” each time they left the room?

*Chicago* is equally as famous for its revolving casting door, which has seen both Broadway veterans and celebrities from the world of music, TV and film take to the stage and sink their teeth into those coveted principal roles for special limited engagements. Some of the company’s principals have been with the show for quite some time and continue to delight with every performance. NaTasha Yvette Williams’ brassy and sultry Mama Morton, Raymond Bokhour’s ever-loveable Amos and R. Lowe’s skilled, gender-bending performance as Mary Sunshine are always crowd-pleasing and essential parts of the production, offering the degree of stability that takes it smoothly through its many cast changes. Although some would argue that Chicago has been reduced to a star vehicle for celebrities wishing to dip their toes into the world of Broadway, I see it as a living, breathing piece of musical theatre history, which rightfully remains at the Ambassador Theatre and reminds us that all you need is class and, of course, all that jazz!

'Chicago' review

Designed by Herbert J. Krapp, the Ambassador Theatre opened on February 11, 1921 under the ownership of the Shubert Organization with a production of the musical *The Rose Girl*. The Shuberts eventually sold the property in 1935, and it was turned into a cinema and television studio for NBC as well as the DuMont Television Network.

The venue was renamed the Ambassador Tele-Theatre until 1956, when the Shuberts reclaimed ownership and reinstated the building as a Broadway theatre. The Ambassador Theatre has been designated a New York City landmark for preservation.

On the subway, take the C, E, or 1 line to 50th Street. The Ambassador Theatre is located a block away at 49th Street and Broadway.

Designed by John C. Portman, Jr., the Marquis Theatre is situated on the third floor of the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

The construction of the hotel resulted in the demolition of the original Helen Hayes Theatre, the Morosco Theatre, the Bijou Theatre, and remnants of the Astor Theatre and the Gaiety Theatre. However, the construction permit was only issued by New York City officials if Portman agreed to include a theatre within the building. The Marquis Theatre opened on July 9, 1986 with a series of concerts by Shirley Bassey.

The Marquis Theatre is closest to the 42nd Street - Times Square subway stop on the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, and S lines. The 50th Street station on the 1 line and the 49th Street station on the N, R, and W lines are also nearby; all are about four blocks from the theatre on 46th Street.

Deborah Cox is best known for her career as an R&B singer, with her album *One Wish* going platinum in the U.S. and her song "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" spending eight weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and marking her successful crossover into pop music. She has earned numerous accolades for her music career, including three Juno Awards, a Soul Train Award, and nominations for a Grammy Award, American Music Award, and NAACP Image Award. In 2022, she was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Cox has also had a successful acting career, appearing on Broadway in *Aida* and *Jekyll and Hyde*. Her screen credits include the TV shows *First Wives Club* and *Station Eleven*.
